Ottawa Closet Doors — Decision Guide
Sliding vs bifold closet doors.
These are the two most common closet door systems in Ottawa homes. Both are practical and affordable. Choosing between them comes down to three things: opening width, how much of the closet you want to see at once, and how much floor space you have in front of the opening.
What are sliding bypass doors?
Bypass doors hang from a top-mounted aluminum track and slide past each other horizontally. At any moment, one panel is in front of the other — so you always have access to roughly half the opening. The panels never leave the opening, which means no swing space is needed in front of the closet.
Standard configurations are two panels (for openings up to about 60 inches) or three panels (for wider openings up to 96 inches). The hardware is concealed in the track, giving a clean finished look.
What are bifold doors?
Bifold panels fold at the centre and pivot out of the opening, stacking against the door frame. When both sides are open, you can see — and reach — the full width of the closet in one go. Each panel is narrower than a bypass panel, so there is less material blocking your view.
Standard bifold sets cover 24 to 36 inches per pair. Larger openings use two sets of bifold panels. The fold-out motion requires a small amount of clearance in front of the opening — typically 3 to 4 inches at the widest point.
When sliding bypass doors are the better call
Wide bedroom closets
Bypass doors are purpose-built for openings of 48 inches or more. A two-panel bypass set looks proportional and operates smoothly at 60 to 72 inches — the most common bedroom closet width in Ottawa homes.
Tight bedrooms with no clearance
If the bed, dresser, or other furniture is close to the closet opening, bypass doors let you operate the closet without moving anything. The panels stay within the frame at all times.
Mirrored panels
Most mirrored closet door systems are built on bypass hardware. The combined weight of two glass panels rides more reliably on bypass track than on bifold pivot pins, especially over years of daily use.
Minimalist or contemporary interiors
Bypass doors have fewer exposed parts. The horizontal slide and flush profile suit modern interiors where clean lines and hidden hardware are a priority.
Bypass trade-off to know
With bypass doors, one panel is always in front of the other. If you want to see your whole closet at once — or grab something from the corner — you will need to slide the door first. For most people this is a minor inconvenience. For people with deep shelving or heavy wardrobe use, it adds up.
When bifold doors are the better call
Smaller closets where full access matters
Laundry rooms, pantries, and linen closets are often 24 to 36 inches wide. At that width, a single pair of bifold panels opens the entire closet in one motion — far more practical than a bypass set that would leave you with two narrow openings.
Utility spaces
Coat closets, basement storage, and utility rooms benefit from full-opening access. When you are pulling out seasonal items or doing laundry, you want the whole interior visible without sliding panels back and forth.
Replacing an old bifold set
If you already have bifold hardware — floor track, pivot pin, and top guide — a replacement bifold panel set is often the most straightforward and affordable update. Switching to bypass requires new track and possibly new jamb work.
Budget installs
Bifold sets start lower in price and require less hardware overall. For secondary bedrooms or rental properties in Ottawa, bifold is a solid, cost-effective replacement.
Bifold trade-off to know
Bifold pivot pins take more wear than bypass rollers. On cheaper hardware sets, the bottom pivot can loosen over time and cause the panel to swing off-track. Invest in quality hardware — especially the top and bottom pivot brackets — and bifold doors will perform reliably for years. We only stock hardware that meets that standard.
Cost difference: bypass vs bifold
| Configuration | Bypass (supply) | Bifold (supply) |
|---|---|---|
| 24" opening | Not typical | From $299 |
| 48" opening | From $349 | From $349 (2 pair) |
| 60" opening | From $399 | From $449 (2 pair) |
| 72" opening | From $449 | From $549 (2 pair) |
| With installation | Add $150–250 | Add $100–200 |
For most openings 48 inches and wider, bypass and bifold are similar in supply cost. The main savings with bifold come on smaller openings. Installation is slightly simpler for bifold on small openings, slightly simpler for bypass on wider ones.
Installation considerations
Both systems are DIY-friendly if your opening is square, plumb, and within standard dimensions. A few things to check before ordering:
Header clearance
Bypass track mounts inside the head jamb — you need roughly 1.5 inches of depth. Most Ottawa door frames have this.
Floor track (bifold)
Traditional bifold uses a floor guide or floor track. Floor track can create a trip hazard; ask about top-hung bifold options if this is a concern.
Rough opening tolerance
Bypass doors are more forgiving of slightly out-of-square openings. Bifold requires a more precise rough opening width for panels to fold cleanly.
Existing jamb and casing
If you are replacing doors without replacing the frame, measure the existing door height — not the rough opening. Door heights in older Ottawa homes are often non-standard.
Three questions to help you decide
1. Is your opening 48 inches or wider?
If yes, bypass is probably the cleaner choice. The proportions work better on wide openings and the hardware cost is similar to two pairs of bifold panels.
2. Do you need to see the full interior at once?
If you have a busy wardrobe, deep shelving, or this is a laundry or utility space — bifold gives you unrestricted access. Bypass doors are better when you mostly access one side at a time.
3. Is there furniture or a wall immediately beside the opening?
Bifold panels need a few inches to fold clear of the frame. If the closet sits tight against a wall with no room to stack panels, bypass is the only option that will work cleanly.
